PUCCINI
MAKING OPERA APPEAL TO YOUNGER AUDIENCES
To commemorate one of the world's most celebrated opera composers, Queenland Conservatorium & Griffith University presented two of Puccini’s Operas. The brief called for a large-format poster promoting Puccini's double bill of Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica.
The brief came with a specific request - to attract a younger audience, since this demographic is traditionally underrepresented at classical music events.
The resulting poster is grounded in historical Italian graphic design, with its ornamental type and earthy tones. The dotted "Puccini" title references pearls and classic luxury. This unexpected blend of vintage and contemporary evokes a sense of timelessness and elegance.
The composition deliberately employs asymmetry and generous white space, appealing to contemporary aesthetics. The angled "THE DOUBLE BILL" sticker and unevenly placed portraits break rigid formality, suggesting this opera experience might be more dynamic than expected.
